Digital Photo Red Eye Removal

Are you lost without a red eye filter? Here is a simple way to get the red out with one tool in Photoshop/Elements.

Here’s a little trick I like to use to get rid of red eye in photos if I don’t have a red eye filter in my image editing software. I am using Photoshop, and typically, it does not have the red eye filter.

Make a copy of the original image and create a new layer, which I’ve already done. Then I am going to zoom in really close. That way, I can really have a good idea of what I’m doing and I'll have more control.

You can see that my brush is much bigger than the red area, and I definitely want to make that smaller. First , I’m going to choose the burn tool, which looks like this little hand. Then I am going to select my brush size. Select a size just a bit smaller than the area that I need. Bump it up a couple pixels. Let’s try 11. That’s really good.

Make sure you have a little bit of a feather on your brush. As you can see, in the brushes palette here, the solid ones don’t have any feather on them. As you scroll down, these will.

Okay? I’ve selected my brush. Now select the options for the burn tool. Up here in the range, you can select highlights, midtones, or shadows. I would start with midtones. The exposure, I have right now at 44 percent. I’m gonna drop it down to about 30, and play with that.

Then I’m going to start clicking right on that red area. As you can see, it’s going to get darker. Now, don't overdo it. Otherwise, it will look really unnatural. Just scroll over to the other eye. Click it a few times. There you go. Then view actual pixels(size). Then you can see the red eye is now removed.
